Tamarind, commonly called ‘Puli’ in South India, is widely used for cooking and as flavoring for its sweet-sour taste. It is used in almost all vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes in Indian cooking. It is used as an ingreadient in fruit drinks, sauces, jams etc. It is used in making chutney and chammanthy in combination with coconut. Tamarind has digestive and laxative qualities and is widely used in traditional medicines and home remedies.
